Asphalt Paving Scams

It’s a sad but true fact - fraud and deception are on the rise. 

Lack of moral standards and integrity is a virus that affects not only homeowner’s but also from small business operations to the large commercial industry. There is a lot of inferior workmanship and unqualified “professionals” providing bad work. They are in for the quick buck and are out there to leave you empty handed.

Buyer Beware of the contractor who gives you a price you can’t pass up and will schedule your job within 24 hours. Many times they come disguised as a subcontractor, but what they’re actually doing is work on the side or under the table, stealing leads, under bidding the job, using equipment and products from the company they’re working for, which is illegal. There are cases where they will actually dump asphalt on the driveway first, then demand payment from the property owner, making threats of harm if not paid.

If it sounds too good to be true ….it usually is.

When you’re seeking bids for a new parking lot, driveway, patio, or walkway make sure you know what you’re getting by following these simple rules:

1. Obtain a written estimate stating the specifications and materials – this is a must. 
2. Do not allow the salesman to pressure you into a quick decision. If it’s a good deal today – it will be a good deal tomorrow
3. Request the company to provide you with a copy of their insurance, workers compensation and references
4. Check with your local Better Business Bureau or the Attorney Generals Office
5. If company accepts cash only, do not use them. Reputable contractors accept checks and credit cards.
6. If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. Low price reflects low quality.
7. If contractor arrives in unmarked trucks or with out of town phone number and/or address on the side
