Comparing Bids

Apples to Apples?...not really

Do you know exactly what you’re getting in your bid proposal ? The power of the purchase rests in the hands of the customer. The role of the contractor is to influence the buying decision in his or her favor.

Some customers decide by price and some decide by service. All decisions should allow for the empowerment of the property owner.  This means the customer should be totally informed of the options available. The short and long term benefits and costs. And most importantly, exactly what the contractor will provide in detail. A non-specific quote leads to a non specific job. When expectations are met with quality materials and great workmanship you have an outstanding finished product.

From small business operations to the commercial industry. Unfortunately, there is a lot of inferior workmanship and unqualified “contractors” providing bad work. They are in it for the quick payoff. It’s imperative you do your research and use qualified contractors. Look at their number of years in business, other completed jobs, name recognition, and referrals as keys to providing you the information you need to make that big decision. Fancy websites, discount coupons, smooth talking sales guys all are out there to leave you empty handed. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU’RE GETTING IN WRITING.

It can’t be stressed enough, get comparable quotes on all work and ask the contractor what is the real difference between their bid and the other. Ask them to explain in detail the difference between the quotes and get all your questions and concerns answered. You should feel comfortable and confident in hiring the contractor of your choice. If the difference is excessive or the costs are way out of line, do more research. This is a major decision which could cost you a lot of money.  Your construction project is a long term decision. If done properly it’s going to last you a long time and be a solid investment.

Make sure the company you use is qualified, insured, carries workers compensation, and has a list of current  references in your area.  For the money you are spending, you deserve to see it.

Professional Contractors pay taxes and insure their workers, equipment and carry business liability coverage. Without adequate coverage you are at risk, no matter how small your project.

Buyer Beware of the contractor who gives you a price you can’t pass up and will schedule your job within 24 hours. Many times they come disguised as a subcontractor, but what they’re actually doing is work on the side or under the table, under bidding the job, using rental equipment or inferior materials.  If it sounds too good to be true ….it usually is.

So when you’re seeking bids for a new parking lot make sure you know what you’re getting. A written estimate stating the specifications and materials is a must. In most cases if there’s a difference in price, then there’s a difference in the materials or depth the contractor is providing.
